Many in Paul's world believed that they could make themselves right with God by how they lived. Not much has changed today when "good people" believe that they will be accepted by God by living moral lives.
In Ephesians 2:11-22 Paul shows that it is only the blood of Christ that puts us in a right relationship with God. Not only are we brought into relationship with God, but Christ's blood also restores our relationships with one another.
